Bed bugs are often mistaken for other things — bites from mosquitoes, fleas, or even allergic reactions. We’ve done hundreds of inspections for people who thought they had bed bugs and didn’t. The most reliable signs are physical evidence, not just bites: small reddish-brown bugs (roughly the size of an apple seed when adult), dark brown or black fecal spots on mattresses and sheets, small blood stains on bedding, shed exoskeletons, and a sweet musty smell in severe infestations. Bites alone aren’t enough — they can come from many sources, and some people don’t react to bed bug bites at all.

Heat treatments hold a space at 53–65°C — hot enough to kill bed bugs at every life stage, but well below the temperature where normal household materials get damaged. Your furniture, mattresses, bedding, clothing, walls, floors, and most belongings come through completely unaffected.

The exceptions are heat-sensitive items that do need to come out before the treatment: aerosol cans (pressurized), wax candles, vinyl records, live plants, certain medications, and some specific electronics. Your detailed prep checklist covers exactly what to remove. If we see anything during the on-site walkthrough that we think might be at risk, we tell you in advance — we won’t run the treatment without flagging concerns first.

Yes — and the prep is more thorough than most people expect. The reason is mechanical: for heat treatment to kill every bed bug in your home, the entire space has to reach 53–65°C at the same time, including inside furniture, behind walls, and under clutter. Anything that creates cold pockets where bed bugs can hide and survive defeats the treatment. The prep work removes those cold pockets — by clearing clutter, laundering clothing, and making sure heat can penetrate every space.

Some companies don’t require prep, or offer to do it for you for an extra fee. In our experience, both approaches lead to worse results: the prep gets rushed or skipped, cold pockets remain, and bed bugs survive. Our prep checklist is designed to give you a single, complete treatment — instead of three or four follow-up visits.

The prep takes effort. But it’s the reason most of our clients are done with bed bugs after one visit.

Most heat treatments happen within 2–5 days of the first call. The timeline depends on how quickly you can complete the prep checklist and how busy we are — peak season runs mid-May through mid-October and books faster.

Same-day inspections are almost always available if you’re within our service radius. Aprehend treatments can also be done quickly since they don’t require the same level of prep as heat treatment. We answer calls 7 days a week from 6 AM to 9 PM, and missed calls get returned within 1–2 hours.

A lot of our clients come to us after chemical treatments didn’t work — it’s one of the most common situations we deal with. Heat treatment still solves the problem, but it’s worth knowing what’s different.

When chemical sprays fail, two things typically happen: the bed bugs that survived pass their pesticide resistance on to the next generation, and the surviving bugs scatter deeper into walls, baseboards, and adjacent rooms to escape the chemical. Both make the infestation harder to find and harder to reach with conventional approaches — but heat penetrates the entire treatment area at once, which means the bed bugs that scattered into hidden areas get killed too.

The honest expectation: a post-chemical infestation is sometimes a slightly harder job than a fresh infestation, especially in larger or older homes where bed bugs have had time to spread. But we’ve done many of these treatments successfully, and the warranty applies the same way it does for any other job.

An inspection takes 30–60 minutes. We start by asking what you’ve noticed — bites, blood spots, anything unusual — and where they’ve been happening. Then we work through the most common harbourage areas: mattress seams, box springs, bed frames, behind headboards, baseboards, and the seams of nearby furniture. We use flashlights and magnification to spot live bugs, eggs, cast skins, and fecal staining — bed bugs leave specific physical signs once you know what to look for.

If we find them, we’ll walk you through exactly what we found so you can see it yourself. If we don’t, we’ll tell you. We won’t sell you a treatment for something you don’t have — and we’ll talk through what else could be causing the symptoms you’re experiencing.

Inspections are free within 45 minutes of our Etobicoke base. Further out or during peak season, we charge $50–100. If we’re too far for an in-person inspection, we can usually screen over the phone by asking questions and reviewing photos you send us.
